Description:
This course will introduce the basics of Chinese brush painting. Students will explore simple landscape painting, with a combination of Chinese brush painting and Western techniques. Using freehand brushwork, the emphasis will be on expressiveness, individual interpretation and abstraction through exaggeration. Students will use ink, watercolor, and gouache on rice paper to create wonderful visual effects. This class will learn to paint trees, woods, mountains and waterfalls.
Materials:
Students need to bring their own art supplies: rice-paper, brushes, ink, colors, color mixing plates, felt (put it under paper) and water container. A detailed materials list is available here.
About the instructor:
I consider the brush-stroke the essence and the language of Chinese Painting. And though ever mindful of the tradition of my training, I have found my own expression with my brush. In my landscapes, I use ink and gouache in many layers to give the painting texture and depth, and sometimes paint on both sides of the absorbent rice paper. I call this technique “ Heavily-Colored Free-Hand Chinese Painting.” Inspiration for my landscapes started in China with Huang Shan (the Yellow Mountains), the Great Wall and the Yangtze River and continued in America with the Grand Canyon, the Pacific Coast and New England.
