Description:

In this class students learn how to recycle metal by melting it down into an ingot and learning various methods of turning ingots into usable product such as sheet, wire, bezel, etc. Students are welcome to bring their own clean scrap (no solder seams or excessive grime), or old gold or silver jewelry they want to melt down and reuse. You are welcome to attend even if you don't have any scrap at the moment, as this class is more about learning how to do it than finishing a product, and will be demo focused. 

Prerequisite: Must have taken at least one metals class where they used the torch before.

Note:

-We will only be using metal that is provably silver or gold, so if you need to schedule a time to go over your collection before the class to confirm metal purity, please feel free to contact Kylie at least 2 weeks before the class starts at kylie.weinzierl@lexart.org. 

-Please bring a notebook, as this is a skills based workshop!

-Students are welcome to bring metal to make their own ingots, but ingots will be available for demonstration purposes.

About the instructor: Kylie Weinzierl is a Boston area interdisciplinary artist, with a primary focus in metalsmithing, a background in sound art, multimedia installation and fabrication, as well as glass work, textile, and performance. Kylie received a Bachelor of the Arts from Arizona State University in 2019, and a Master of Fine Arts from the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in February 2024. Kylie is the head Jewelry Instructor at Stonybrook Metal Arts & Sculpture School in Jamaica Plain, the Metals Studio Manager at LexArt, and is currently enrolled in the Jewelry Making & Repair program at North Bennet Street School in Boston.
